{"id":25740,"date":"2025-05-23T05:05:40","date_gmt":"2025-05-23T02:05:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mwehle.eu\/wp\/?p=25740"},"modified":"2025-05-23T05:05:40","modified_gmt":"2025-05-23T02:05:40","slug":"eus-chocolate-crisis-worsened-by-climate-breakdown","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wehle.ru\/wp\/?p=25740","title":{"rendered":"EU\u2019s \u2018chocolate crisis\u2019 worsened by climate breakdown"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2025\/may\/21\/eu-chocolate-climate-breakdown-crisis-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Guardian<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Climate breakdown and wildlife loss are deepening the EU\u2019s \u201cchocolate crisis\u201d, a\u00a0report\u00a0has argued, with cocoa one of six key commodities to come mostly from countries vulnerable to environmental threats.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">More than two-thirds of the cocoa, coffee, soy, rice, wheat and maize brought into the EU in 2023 came from countries that are not well prepared for climate change, according to the UK consultants Foresight Transitions.<\/p>\n<p>For three of the commodities \u2013 cocoa, wheat and maize \u2013 two-thirds of imports came from countries whose biodiversity was deemed not to be intact, the analysis found.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u2026<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">The report, which was commissioned by the European Climate Foundation, argued that large chocolate manufacturers should invest in climate adaptation and biodiversity protection in cocoa-growing countries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">\u201cThis is not an act of altruism or ESG [sustainable finance], but rather a vital derisking exercise for supply chains,\u201d the authors wrote.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u2026<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Paul Behrens, an environmental researcher at the University of Oxford and author of a textbook on food and sustainability, who was not involved in the research, said the findings painted an \u201cextremely worrying picture\u201d for food resilience.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">\u201cPolicymakers like to think of the EU as food-secure because it produces quite a lot of its own food,\u201d he said. \u201cBut what this report shows is that the EU is vulnerable to climate and biodiversity risks in some vital food supply chains.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In May 2025 articles use phrases like &#8222;countries vulnerable to environmental threats&#8220;, &#8222;countries that are not well prepared for climate change&#8220;, &#8222;countries whose biodiversity was deemed not to be intact&#8220;, &#8222;the EU is vulnerable to climate and biodiversity risks&#8220;.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Guardian: Climate breakdown and wildlife loss are deepening the EU\u2019s \u201cchocolate crisis\u201d, a\u00a0report\u00a0has argued, with cocoa one of six key commodities to come mostly from countries vulnerable to environmental threats.
