My attention was drawn initially not by the photo but by the headline, which I read, along with the article, in the context of reading numerous German commentators on the US’s withdrawal from connection with Europe. People like Fischer and Joffe ponder the path of Germany and the EU in a world of „two and a half“ superpowers. In a world where the US jousts for hegemony with China and economy-poor nuclear weapon-rich Russia struggles to reassert its relevance rather than rebuilding bridges to Europe the US plans to „Build Back Better“, to „buy American“.<\/p>\n

Is it just me, or does Biden’s „Build Back Better“ tend to remind people of Melania Trump’s „Be Best“?<\/p>\n

I sat looking at this and was struck by the realization that quite a lot of the photographs of life in the US feature people who are obese. This isn’t at all limited to European media, as I commonly see it in the American press as well. These are odd images.<\/p>\n

Dass der ehemalige Vizepr\u00e4sident dabei \u00f6konomisch-patriotische T\u00f6ne anschlug, die man bisher eher von Trump kannte, ist eine leichte Abkehr von der liberalen Frei\u00adhandels\u00adpolitik, f\u00fcr die die Demokraten in den vergangenen Jahrzehnten standen \u2013 viel mehr aber auch nicht. Auch Bidens sonstige Vorschl\u00e4ge \u2013 h\u00f6here Mindestl\u00f6hne, mehr Geld f\u00fcr Schulen in armen Bezirken und kostenlose Fachhochschulen \u2013 sind zwar vern\u00fcnftig, aber letztlich blo\u00df politische Feinjustierungen. Sie d\u00fcrften die Not in den USA kaum lindern, wo ein erheblicher Teil der B\u00fcrger unter der weitgehend ungebremsten Macht des Kapitals leidet. Das Fehlen grundlegender sozialer Rechte trifft viele von Tag zu Tag st\u00e4rker und\u00a0l\u00f6st den Kitt auf<\/a>, der die Gesellschaft bisher zusammen\u00adhielt. Mangels politischer Alternativen darf sich Biden trotzdem berechtigte Hoffnungen machen, zum 46. Pr\u00e4sident der Vereinigten Staaten gew\u00e4hlt zu werden.\u2026<\/p>\n

Bidens \u00f6konomischer Berater, der ehemalige Finanzminister Larry Summers, galt jahrelang als Bef\u00fcrworter eines entfesselten Finanzsektors. Er war Teil von Obamas Expertenteam zur Bew\u00e4ltigung der Finanzkrise. Die Ergebnisse sind bekannt: W\u00e4hrend gro\u00dfe Kreditinstitute gerettet wurden, verloren Millionen US-Amerikaner ihre Jobs und ihr Wohneigentum.\u2026<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
